PRAISE III "MUSIC FOR YOUR SOUL"
In
jazz, there is always that moment when you wonder
what's happening next. You sit on the edge of your
seat, curious to see how a melody might unfold or
how a rhythm might resolve. If the musicians are
creative, they will open up new possibilities for
the same, old song. If they are faithful, they will
also lead you home.
Jim
Martinez offers creativity and faithfulness in his
third Jazz Praise project. He takes familiar tunes
from the church and parachurch, and interprets them
through his jazz sensibilities. The result is a creative
project that honors the Creator and brings delight
to the rest of us.
Check
out, for instance, his gentle ballad arrangement
of "O, How He Loves You and Me." Or dig
Jim's new version of "Great is the Lord." It's
pretty obvious that the elegant Mr. Martinez knows
how -and when- to swing.
The
scriptures repeatedly exult us to "sing a new
song to the Lord*." In my experience as a Presbyterian
minister, the people who most resist new songs are
those whose faith has grown stale and settled. If
you are one of them, you may well be holding a tonic
for your soul in your hands.
This
CD has been produced with a lot of love, so that
your spirits might be lifted and your life enriched.
Enjoy this recording. It's the next best thing to
inviting Jim Martinez to play in your church.

PRAISE II "PRAISE HIM WITH JAZZ"
This
is jazz till you drop! Joined by Lionel Hampton,
Christian Fabian and Wally 'Gator' Watson, Martinez
has pulled out all the stops on this largely instrumental
album.
It
kicks in with a rocking version of "Holy, Holy,
Holy" -instantly recognisable because of the
strong melody line that runs through it.
As
the album develops, we hear everything from an amusing
dialogue with Lionel Hampton (who is 93 and sounds
as though he is 40), to a vocal version of 'Amazing
Grace".
Track
10 and 13 are sung by the very talented Debi Selby,
whose vocal dexterity matches the flair with which
the boys play their instruments - beautiful.
Martinez
is responsible for the production, which is outstanding.
'Praise Him With Jazz' is a suberb work for the glory
of God.

PRAISE I "DOXOLOGY"
'Doxology:
A Jazz Praise' is an instrumental offering from jazz
pianist Jim Martinez, joined by Ed Thigpen on drums
and Christian Fabian on bass. This is without a doubt
the best and most complete jazz sound I have heard
since I know not when.
Although
Martinez didn't pen any of the tracks himself, he
and his band have a unique style and approach that
gives an instant freshness to these old hymns - in
fact they give them life!
It
always gives me a buzz when I hear excellent music,
played by seriously brilliant musicians and it goes
beyond the buzz when it's produced well - for me
it makes a complete package.
Martinez
was responsible for the production and if I were
he I would give myself a pat on the back - it's marvellous!
It
is quite obvious that these boys spend time in the
presence of the Lord, the music is focused right
- it hits you right in the spirit.
